Enclosure to Governor's Despatch No. 397 of the 31st July, 1901.

Report from Mr. D. Wood to Colonial Secretary.

30009.

Hon. Colonial Secretary,

The Committee met, and took up the matter of increases to House Allowances and agreed to recommend as follows:-

1. First Class Inspectors, Sanitary Board, $35 p.m.

2. Other Inspectors, $30

3. Superintendent of Registration Branch, Post Office, $50

4. Senior Clerk, Post Office, $50

5. Head Mistress, Belilios Public School, $50

6. Assistant Superintendent, Botanical and Afforestation Department, $80

7. All Medical Officers not in possession of Quarters, $90

8. The Committee endorse the recommendation of His Excellency the Governor that the Boarding Officer and Second Boarding Officer, Harbour Department, each receive $50 p.m.

9. Assistant Inspector of Junks and Cargo Boats $30 p.m.

10. Chief Assistant, Observatory, and First Assistant, Observatory, $70 each p.m.

11. The Committee observe that in C.S.O.2018/1900 Inspector W. Dandy of the Sanitary Department has been put down for an increase from his allowance of $35 p.m. to $80 p.m. As Mr. Dandy has left the Service this provision should be omitted.

12. The Committee recommend that the House Allowances of the Senior Inspectors, Sanitary Department, now on requisition from England, be considered on the arrival of these Officers in Hongkong, the intention of the Committee being that the new men should be paid on the same scales as Nos. 1 and 2.

13. The Committee take it that although the allowances to certain Post Office Officials may appear high the reason is that they are paid on a scale sufficient to enable them to house in close proximity to the Post Office.

(Sgd.) David Wood,

Honorary Secretary.
